Beauty Reincarnated uses as its inspiration a 19th century self-portrait miniature by Sarah Goodridge. This miniature, titled Beauty Revealed, was apparently given as a gift to Goodridge’s secret lover, Daniel Webster. When I first saw this miniature in the Metropolitan Museum’s exhibit of the Manney Collection in 1991 I had a flash of recognition, as if this were my own work. Clearly, a contemporary update of the subject was needed.
Almost 2 decades later, I reprised the subject in Beauty Revealed, Reincarnated and Reconstructed, also illustrated in this category.
