A Rebus, 1993
Oil on copper and aluminum, brass letters, engraved brass
13” x 142”
A Rebus is the second of two “solvable” paintings (see also Rebus in this category). Rebuses are visual puzzles where images stand in for words or parts of words, and letters are subtracted or added to create a phrase unrelated to the images. The solutions of Rebus and A Rebus work together, concealing a conversation. Complicating the viewer’s experience is that without the ability to solve the puzzles, the full meaning is lost. A prize was offered (in 1993) to the first person to solve both of my Rebus paintings.
